Solomon Island Oil Spill
Our Model
More than 70 tonnes of oil has been lost at Rennell island. The ship is called the Solomon trader. It is 740 feet long(225 meters). It hit the reef on February 5 2019. There is still 650 tonnes of oil aboard. Experts have found out there's a high chance of it leaking as well. The tanker was trying to load a cargo of bauxite used to make aluminum in the Solomon islands, then cyclone Oma pushed onto the reef. The oil slick is 3 miles long and heading for east Rennell island. The company who owned the tanker tried to use a tugboat to remove the tanker but only made it worse. They also blame hazardous conditions so they can't investigate from underwater. In my opinion I think the company should try help more instead of just doing nothing.
Here are somethings you can do to help
preserve oil.
preserve oil.
- Bike or walk short distances
- Use public transport
